A single hair follicle grows its hair strand over a period of four to six years (the anagen phase). It then rests for two to four months (the telogen phase), after which it loses the “old” hair as a new hair shaft grows and pushes out its predecessor. When the new hair grows in, it does so at a rate of approximately half an inch per month. At any time, 10 percent of your hair is in the telogen phase and 90 percent is in the anagen phase.

Male pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia, is a genetic condition that causes hair loss in men. It is the most common type of hair loss in men and is caused by a combination of genetic factors and the hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone). This hormone causes hair follicles to shrink, leading to thinner and shorter hair growth, and eventually no hair growth at all.

Hair loss can be reversible in some cases, depending on the underlying cause. For example, if hair loss is caused by a temporary medical condition, such as thyroid disease or a nutritional deficiency, it can often be reversed with treatment. However, in cases of genetic hair loss, such as male pattern baldness, hair loss is usually not reversible but can be slowed or managed with various treatments.

There are many different treatments available for hair loss, depending on the cause and severity of the condition. Some treatments include medications, such as minoxidil and finasteride, which can help slow or stop hair loss and promote hair growth. Hair transplant surgery is also an option for some individuals. Other treatments may include lifestyle changes, such as improving diet and reducing stress, and using hair care products that promote healthy hair growth.

While not all types of hair loss can be prevented, there are some things you can do to help maintain healthy hair growth and prevent hair loss. These include maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle, reducing stress, avoiding harsh hair treatments and styles, using hair care products that promote healthy hair growth, and seeking medical treatment for underlying medical conditions that can cause hair loss.

Yes, hair loss can be hereditary. Male and female pattern baldness are both genetic conditions that are passed down from parents to their children. If one or both parents have the gene for hair loss, their children may also inherit the gene and be at risk for hair loss later in life.

It is recommended to see a doctor if you are experiencing sudden or excessive hair loss, as this may be a sign of an underlying medical condition. Additionally, if hair loss is causing significant emotional distress or affecting your quality of life, it is important to seek medical advice and discuss treatment options.

Sometimes stress can play a role in diffuse loss. Stress-induced loss ordinarily regrows within a year of eliminating the cause.

There is no simple answer to this. No one treatment is spectacular for the average individual. However, some treatments yield decent results for most people. A common fundamental approach is to use an “antiandrogen” of some kind, whether systemic or topical, and a growth stimulant such as minoxidil. To this basic program, many add a topical SOD. Other options include therapeutic shampoos, dietary and nutritional considerations, and even lifestyle modifications.

Rogaine is just a brand name for minoxidil. Minoxidil can be helpful in pattern loss, but it is not a panacea. It is best used as part of an overall program that attacks the problem from different angles.

The term “common baldness” usually means male-pattern baldness, or permanent-pattern baldness.

Perhaps. Your doctor will probably ask you some questions about your diet, any medicines you’re taking, whether you’ve had a recent illness and how you take care of your hair. If you’re a woman, your doctor may ask questions about your menstrual cycle, pregnancies, and menopause. Your doctor may want to do a physical exam to look for other causes of hair loss. Finally, blood tests or a biopsy of your scalp may be needed.

Pulling the hair tightly in a ponytail and the repeated traction used for hair extensions and tight braiding can cause some hair loss, especially in the temple area. This is called traction alopecia. If not corrected, the hair follicle may be permanently damaged. Chemicals that dye, bleach, straighten or perm the hair can also cause the shaft to break off, but once the chemical insult has stopped, the root portion should grow back.
